Someone's foot struck him hard in the face. Not the side of the foot either but the bottom of the other guys rugby boot, one of the forward studs tearing at the skin on his cheekbone.

Gasping with pain he was helped off the pitch and given medical attention before being taken to hospital.

Later in the day he was discharged with the left side of his face all bandaged up.

Being fit, healthy and young it didn't take very long for the injury to heal but it did leave a scar. Not a very big scar but certainly noticeable by anyone within a reasonable distance.

At first it didn't affect John that much, that is not until he started talking to people again.

You see, he noticed a little change in people's attitude towards him. At first he thought it was his imagination... But over time it happened so often that it really started to get him down emotionally.
